The Sporting Estate - Walks

"Plantation Walk" - 2.6km
"Ponds Walk" - 1.7km

The woodlands surrounding the hotel have two Woodland Walks for guests to explore that are brimming with interesting features well worth discovering. Plus there are many ancient and rare trees, which have been individually labelled.

Here is a brief description of just some of the things you will find:

  • Beginning at the footbridge behind the hotel conservatory
  • Re-developed interconnecting Japanese ponds, originally made in Victorian times
  • The golf driving range
  • Japanese bridge over the trout pond
  • The Clay Pigeon Shooting School
  • In the Plantation Forest deer, squirrels, pheasants and badgers can be found
  • Where the Walled Garden to the main house used to be
  • The old orchard, now filled with wild flowers and one last remaining apple tree
  • Tree Sparrow boxes - this is the core of a tree sparrow conservation area
  • The Garden Cottage, and there are 12 Yew Trees, known as The Twelve Apostles
  • The lime tree walk leads to the Hermit's Grotto (fashionable to have a hermit living in the bottom of your garden in Victorian times)
  • The huge stump of a 300 year old Wellingtonia tree that came down in the 1990 storms
  • Lastly, finish at the hotel for a well deserved tea or coffee

For more walking ideas VisitScotland have a selection of recommended walks in the Scottish Borders and surrounding area.
